Heartburn, also known as Gastrosophageal reflux disease, GERD or acid reflux
Heartburn happens when acid from your stomach moves up into your throat. This can cause a burning feeling in your chest, sour taste in your mouth, bad breath or extra burping.
You do not always need to see a doctor first. In many cases our pharmacists may be able to prescribe treatments to help with these symptoms.
When to get emergency help
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department right away if you have
• chest pain that feels like pressure, squeezing or heavy tightness
• pain that spreads to your neck, jaw, shoulder or arm
• trouble breathing
• coughing or throwing up blood or dark material
• sudden, heavy or unusual sweating
Please note that an appointment with the pharmacist does not guarantee a prescription. The pharmacist will assess your symptoms and decide if treatment at the pharmacy is right for you, or if you should be referred to a doctor.
