Also known as urticaria.
Hives are raised, red or skin-coloured patches that are very itchy. They can appear on any part of the body and may change shape or move around. Hives often happen after an allergic trigger, such as an insect bite, food, medicine or contact with something that irritates your skin.
You do not always need to see a doctor first. In many cases our pharmacists may be able to prescribe treatments to help with itching and swelling
When to get emergency help
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department right away if you have
• trouble breathing or a whistling sound when you breathe
• puffiness of the face, tongue, lips or throat
• finding it hard to talk or swallow
• feeling weak, dizzy or like you might pass out
• skin that feels cold and sweaty and looks paler than normal
Please note that an appointment with the pharmacist does not guarantee a prescription. The pharmacist will assess your symptoms and decide if treatment at the pharmacy is right for you, or if you should be referred to a doctor.
