Also known as Conjunctivitis (bacterial, allergic or viral).
Conjunctivitis, or pink eye, happens when the clear layer that covers the white part of your eye becomes irritated or infected. It can be caused by germs like bacteria or viruses, or by allergies such as dust or pollen. The eye can look red or pink and may feel itchy, burning or gritty, like something is stuck in it. You may have tears, sticky discharge or crust on your eyelashes when you wake up.
You do not always need to see a doctor first. In many cases our pharmacists may be able to prescribe treatments to help with your symptoms, such as eye drops.
Please note that an appointment with the pharmacist does not guarantee a prescription. The pharmacist will assess your symptoms and decide if treatment at the pharmacy is right for you, or if you should be referred to a doctor.
