Also known as Vulvovaginal candidiasis.
A vaginal yeast infection is a common problem in people with a vagina. It happens when there is too much yeast, a type of fungus that normally lives in the vagina. It can cause itching and burning in and around the vagina, thick white discharge that may look like cottage cheese, and soreness or discomfort, especially during sex or when peeing.
You do not always need to see a doctor first. If you are female and not pregnant, our pharmacists may be able to prescribe an antifungal treatment.
When to see a doctor:
• If you are pregnant
• If you are less than 12 years old
Please note that an appointment with the pharmacist does not guarantee a prescription. The pharmacist will assess your symptoms and decide if treatment at the pharmacy is right for you, or if you should be referred to a doctor.
